Product overview

Femara 2.5 mg Letrozole Tablets

Femara is letrozole at 2.5 mg per tablet, sold in packs of 100 tablets for oral use. Letrozole is a nonsteroidal aromatase inhibitor: it lowers the amount of estrogen the body produces. Medically it treats early breast cancer in women who have been through menopause, including after treatment with tamoxifen, and it is used in advanced disease as well. It is a prescription medicine, taken once a day with or without food. Related estrogen-control products on the same shelf are the other aromatase inhibitors Arimidex and Aromasin, and the SERMs Nolvadex and Clomid.

  • Nonsteroidal aromatase inhibitor, prescription medicine
  • One tablet a day, with or without food
  • GMP-manufactured and HPLC-verified, COA on file per batch

How Letrozole Works

Letrozole blocks the aromatase enzyme, so less androgen is turned into estrogen and blood estrogen falls. Some breast cancers need estrogen to grow, and that is why lowering it can slow them. The same fall in estrogen reaches bone, which is why the label says bone mineral density may drop and why cholesterol is checked. Letrozole is meant for women who have already been through menopause, and it should not be taken during pregnancy.

Dosage & Administration

The labelled dose for breast cancer is 2.5 mg once a day, without regard to meals, and in cirrhosis or severe liver impairment the label halves the exposure to 2.5 mg every other day. Letrozole can harm a fetus and is not used in pregnancy. Common effects include hot flushes, night sweats, nausea, muscle and joint pain, tiredness and swelling of the hands and feet; serious ones such as chest pain, trouble breathing, calf pain or yellowing of the skin need urgent care.

Quality & Authenticity

Every batch is produced under GMP conditions and checked by third-party HPLC, with a Certificate of Analysis held for the batch. Store the tablets at room temperature, away from excess heat and moisture, and not in the bathroom.

For laboratory research only. Prescription medicine: consult a healthcare professional before use.

With Tamoxifen and Other Estrogen-Lowering Medicines

Not compatible with tamoxifen: co-administration cut letrozole plasma levels by about 38 percent in a label study, so the two are used one after the other and not together. There is no clinical experience with letrozole combined with other anticancer agents.

Only one estrogen-lowering medicine is taken at a time, and the choice between an aromatase inhibitor and a SERM such as Nolvadex is a doctor's call.

With Cimetidine, Warfarin and Food

Cimetidine and warfarin showed no clinically significant interaction with letrozole in label studies, so no dose change is built around them.

The tablet is taken with or without food. Tell the doctor about high cholesterol, osteoporosis or liver disease, because letrozole can lower bone density and raise cholesterol.

Prescription medicine. Compatibility notes above follow the FDA labeling for letrozole and are not medical advice; consult a healthcare professional.

FAQ

Before you ask

Questions, answered

Femara is letrozole, a nonsteroidal aromatase inhibitor prescribed to treat early breast cancer in women who have been through menopause, including after tamoxifen, and to treat disease that has spread. It works by lowering the amount of estrogen the body makes, which can slow cancers that need estrogen to grow. It is a prescription medicine and is not used in women who have not yet been through menopause.
The labelled dose is one 2.5 mg tablet once a day, without regard to meals, taken at about the same time each day. Treatment often lasts years, and the medicine is continued even when the patient feels well. In cirrhosis or severe liver impairment the label reduces exposure by half, to 2.5 mg every other day. Missed doses are taken as soon as remembered, but a double dose is never used.
Common effects are hot flushes, night sweats, nausea, vomiting, constipation or diarrhea, heartburn, stomach pain, weight changes, muscle and joint pain, tiredness, headache, dizziness, swelling of the hands and feet, trouble sleeping, hair loss and blurry vision. Effects that need urgent care include chest pain, rash or hives, trouble breathing, unusual bleeding, pain in the upper right stomach, yellowing of the skin or eyes, calf pain or warmth and sudden speech or weakness problems.
They are not taken together. In a study in the label, co-administration of letrozole with tamoxifen 20 mg daily lowered letrozole plasma levels by about 38 percent on average. Clinical experience shows the effect of letrozole is not lost when it is given immediately after a course of tamoxifen, and that sequential approach is how the two are usually used. An aromatase inhibitor such as Aromasin is the same kind of swap.
Letrozole is for women who have been through menopause and cannot become pregnant; it is contraindicated in pregnancy because it can harm the fetus. Anyone with high cholesterol, osteoporosis or liver disease should tell the doctor first, because letrozole can lower bone mineral density and raise cholesterol, and the label asks that both be monitored. It may also cause drowsiness, so driving is avoided until the effect is known.
