Product overview
Amlodipine - Amlip 2.5 mg, 5 mg and Amlodac 5 mg Tablets
Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker used to treat high blood pressure and certain types of angina and coronary artery disease. It relaxes the blood vessels, so the heart does not have to pump as hard, and in angina it increases the blood supply to the heart muscle. It is supplied here as Amlip 2.5 mg, Amlip 5 mg and Amlodac 5 mg tablets, 100 tablets per pack. It is often combined with a second blood pressure medicine from a different class, such as Nebivolol or Telmisartan, when one tablet alone does not bring pressure down enough.

Variant Comparison
All three variants contain amlodipine, so the difference is the strength and who it suits.
| Variant | Dosage | Form and quantity | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amlip 2.5 mg | One tablet once daily | Tablet, 2.5 mg | Starting dose, older patients and added to other tablets |
| Amlip 5 mg | One tablet once daily | Tablet, 5 mg | Usual maintenance dose for adults |
| Amlodac 5 mg | One tablet once daily | Tablet, 5 mg | Same strength from a second manufacturer |
The two 5 mg tablets carry the same amount and differ only in manufacturer, so the choice between them is brand and price. The 2.5 mg tablet is the lower step, used to start gently, in older patients, or when amlodipine is added to a second medicine and pressure must not drop too fast. Ankle swelling is more likely at higher strengths, which is one reason treatment often stays at the lowest effective dose. Cholesterol treatment is a separate matter and is handled with a statin such as Atorlip.
How Amlodipine Works
Amlodipine blocks calcium channels in the muscle of artery walls, so the arteries relax and widen and blood pressure falls. In angina the same relaxation increases blood flow and oxygen to the heart muscle and reduces its workload, which is why attacks become less frequent. Ankle and foot swelling comes from vessel dilation rather than fluid overload.
Dosage & Administration
One tablet once a day with or without food, at the same time each day. The dose may be increased by your doctor if pressure is still high, and it should not be stopped without medical advice, because blood pressure can rise again. If you miss a dose, take it when you remember, but if the next dose is less than 12 hours away, skip it; never take two doses at once. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding. Report chest pain that becomes more frequent or more severe, or a rapid, pounding or irregular heartbeat.

Questions, answered
Amlodipine treats high blood pressure and certain types of angina and coronary artery disease. It relaxes the blood vessels so the heart pumps against less resistance, and in angina it increases the blood supply to the heart muscle. It is usually taken long term, often together with another blood pressure medicine.
One tablet once a day with or without food, at about the same time every day. Do not take more or less than prescribed, and do not stop without talking to your doctor. If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless the next dose is less than 12 hours away, and never take two doses at once.
The best known effect is swelling of the hands, feet, ankles or lower legs, which is more likely at higher doses. Others include nausea, stomach pain, dizziness or lightheadedness, drowsiness, excessive tiredness, flushing, and muscle stiffness or tremors. Get medical help for chest pain that becomes more frequent or severe, or for a rapid, pounding or irregular heartbeat.
No. Do not stop taking amlodipine without talking to your doctor, even if you feel well and your pressure readings look normal, because the tablet is what keeps them normal. Stopping suddenly can let blood pressure rise again. If side effects bother you, ask about adjusting the dose instead.
Yes, it is often combined with a beta blocker, an ACE inhibitor or an ARB when one tablet is not enough. Combinations are decided by the prescriber, who will watch your blood pressure and any dizziness. Tell your doctor about every medicine and supplement you take, and never add another blood pressure product on your own.
