Product overview
Atorvastatin - Atorlip 5 mg, 10 mg and 20 mg Tablets
Atorvastatin is a statin used to lower cholesterol and to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. It is taken once a day with a cholesterol-lowering diet and exercise, both for high cholesterol and for risk that comes from other conditions. It is supplied here as Atorlip 5 mg, Atorlip 10 mg and Atorlip 20 mg tablets, 30 tablets per pack, made by Cipla. Another statin with the same purpose is Rosuvastatin, and a tablet that works on cholesterol absorption instead of production is Ezetimibe.

Variant Comparison
All three variants contain atorvastatin, so the difference is the strength reached at each step of the dose ladder.
| Variant | Dosage | Form and quantity | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Atorlip 5 mg | One tablet once daily | Film-coated tablet, 5 mg | Mild cholesterol elevation and starting treatment |
| Atorlip 10 mg | One tablet once daily | Film-coated tablet, 10 mg | Usual starting dose for most adults |
| Atorlip 20 mg | One tablet once daily | Film-coated tablet, 20 mg | Higher cholesterol or higher cardiovascular risk |
Treatment starts low and is increased no more often than every two to four weeks, so the 5 mg and 10 mg tablets are the steps most people pass through, and the 20 mg tablet is used when the target is not reached or the risk calls for stronger lowering. Because the strengths cover the range without splitting tablets, the variant is simply the step prescribed. Other medicines are added rather than substituted: an antiplatelet such as Clopidogrel is given after a heart attack or stent, where the aim is clot prevention.
How Atorvastatin Works
Atorvastatin blocks an enzyme in the liver that makes cholesterol, so the liver produces less of it and takes more cholesterol out of the blood. That lowers LDL cholesterol in particular and slows the build-up of cholesterol on artery walls. Muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, unusual tiredness and dark urine need medical attention because they can be signs of a rare muscle problem, and liver blood tests are checked before and during treatment.
Dosage & Administration
One tablet once a day, with or without food, at the same time each day. The dose is increased step by step, not more often than every two to four weeks, until cholesterol reaches target. Do not stop taking it because you feel well: treatment is long term. Tell your doctor about cimetidine, niacin and other supplements you take, and ask about grapefruit, which affects how the tablet is handled. Atorvastatin is not continued in pregnancy: if you become pregnant, stop the tablet and contact your doctor straight away. Do not take it with liver disease without medical review.

FAQ
Before you ask
Questions, answered
Atorvastatin is used to lower cholesterol and to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. It is taken with a cholesterol-lowering diet, both by people with high cholesterol and by people whose cardiovascular risk is raised by other conditions. It is a long-term treatment, not a short course.
One tablet once a day with or without food, at the same time each day. Your doctor starts at a low dose and increases it no more often than every two to four weeks until your cholesterol reaches target. Keep taking it even if you feel well, and do not stop without talking to your doctor.
Common effects include diarrhoea, heartburn, gas, joint pain, forgetfulness and confusion. Call a doctor straight away for muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, unusual tiredness or fever, or for signs of liver trouble such as nausea, loss of appetite, pain in the upper right abdomen, dark urine or yellowing of the skin and eyes. Serious allergic reactions are uncommon but need emergency help.
Ask your doctor before eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice, because it changes how the body handles atorvastatin and can raise the level of the medicine in the blood. The same advice applies to cimetidine and niacin, which are sold without a prescription, so mention them before you start either of them.
The liver is where atorvastatin works, and liver blood tests are checked before treatment and during it. Tell your doctor if you have or have had liver disease, because the tablet is usually not given in that case, and report symptoms such as nausea, loss of appetite or yellowing of the skin straight away.
No. Atorvastatin may harm the unborn baby. If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, tell your doctor before starting it, and if you become pregnant while taking it, stop the tablets and contact your doctor immediately. Do not restart treatment on your own.
