Product overview

Rosuvastatin - Rosulip 5 mg and 10 mg Tablets

Rosuvastatin is a statin used to lower cholesterol and to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. It is taken once a day with a cholesterol-lowering diet, both by people with high cholesterol and by people whose risk is raised by other conditions. It is supplied here as Rosulip 5 mg and Rosulip 10 mg tablets, 30 tablets per pack, made by Cipla. Rosuvastatin belongs to the same class as Atorvastatin, and a tablet that reduces cholesterol absorption instead of production is Ezetimibe.

  • Two variants: Rosulip 5 mg and Rosulip 10 mg
  • 30 tablets per pack
  • Statin that lowers cholesterol and cardiovascular risk
  • A prescription medicine in most countries

Variant Comparison

Both variants contain rosuvastatin, so the difference is the strength used at each step of treatment.

Variant Dosage Form and quantity Best use
Rosulip 5 mg One tablet once daily Film-coated tablet, 5 mg Starting treatment and moderate cholesterol
Rosulip 10 mg One tablet once daily Film-coated tablet, 10 mg Higher cholesterol or higher cardiovascular risk

Treatment usually starts at the lower strength and is increased no more often than once every two to four weeks, so the 5 mg tablet is where most courses begin and the 10 mg tablet is the step reached when cholesterol is still above target or the risk of a heart attack or stroke needs stronger lowering. The two strengths cover the usual range without splitting tablets, and the strength used at any point is the step the prescriber has chosen from the cholesterol result. Antiplatelet treatment is a separate decision: after a heart attack or after a stent, a medicine such as Clopidogrel is added to prevent clots, while the statin handles cholesterol.

How Rosuvastatin Works

Rosuvastatin blocks the liver enzyme that produces cholesterol, so less is made and the liver removes more cholesterol from the blood. That lowers LDL cholesterol, the fraction that builds up inside artery walls, and the effect is why statins reduce heart attacks and strokes. The rare but serious concerns are muscle injury and liver effects, so unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, dark or reddish urine and unusual tiredness need medical assessment.

Dosage & Administration

One tablet once a day, with or without food, at the same time each day. Swallow the tablet whole: it must not be split, chewed or crushed. The dose is increased step by step no more often than every two to four weeks, and treatment continues long term even when you feel well. If you take an antacid containing aluminium or magnesium hydroxide, take it at least two hours after rosuvastatin. Tell your doctor about all medicines and supplements, and about liver disease, because liver blood tests are checked before and during treatment. If you become pregnant, contact your doctor immediately.

FAQ

Before you ask

Questions, answered

Rosuvastatin lowers cholesterol and reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke. It is used with a cholesterol-lowering diet by people whose cholesterol is high and by people whose risk is raised by other conditions. It is a long-term treatment that has to be taken continuously to keep cholesterol down.

One tablet once a day with or without food, at the same time each day. Swallow the tablet whole: do not split, chew or crush it. The dose is increased slowly, no more often than every two to four weeks, until your cholesterol reaches target. Keep taking it even if you feel well.

Common effects are constipation, stomach pain, dizziness, trouble sleeping, depression, joint pain, headache, memory loss and confusion. Get medical help for muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, loss of energy, fever, dark or reddish urine, less urine than usual, yellowing of the skin or eyes, pain in the upper right abdomen or unusual bruising and bleeding.

Yes, some. Antacids containing aluminium or magnesium hydroxide reduce the absorption of rosuvastatin, so take them at least two hours after your tablet. Tell your doctor about every prescription and non-prescription medicine, vitamin and herbal product you take, because some change the level of rosuvastatin in the blood or add to the risk of muscle problems.

Both are statins and both lower cholesterol by blocking the same liver enzyme, and both are taken once daily. They differ in the strengths sold and in how the body handles them, and the choice between them is made by the prescriber based on your cholesterol result, other medicines and any liver or muscle history. Which is stronger is not something to decide without a doctor.

Statins are not used in pregnancy, and you should tell your doctor before starting rosuvastatin if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy. If you become pregnant while taking it, contact your doctor immediately so treatment can be stopped and alternatives discussed.

Yes, 30-tablet packs of Rosulip 5 mg and Rosulip 10 mg are stocked here and international shipping is available at checkout.
