Product overview

Bacteriostatic Water - Sterile Diluent for Peptides and Injectables

Bacteriostatic Water is sterile, nonpyrogenic water for injection containing 0.9% (9 mg/mL) of benzyl alcohol added as a bacteriostatic preservative. Its only purpose is to dilute or dissolve drugs that are given by injection, such as lyophilized peptides and other parenteral preparations. Because the vial is a multiple-dose container, repeated withdrawals can be made, and the benzyl alcohol slows bacterial growth between punctures.

  • Sterile water with 0.9% (9 mg/mL) benzyl alcohol, pH 5.7 (4.5 to 7.0)
  • Multi-dose vial - repeated withdrawals for diluting or dissolving injectables
  • Suits peptide and hormone vials such as Somatropin and BPC-157
  • U.S. domestic and international shipping

How Bacteriostatic Water Works

The water itself carries no drug: it is the vehicle. Its preserved formulation keeps the solution sterile enough for repeated use from one vial, which is why lyophilized products such as CJC-1295 DAC and human chorionic gonadotropin HCG are commonly reconstituted with it. Bacteriostatic water must be made approximately isotonic before use, and it is not for intravenous injection without that adjustment, because administering it without a solute may cause hemolysis. It must not be used in neonates, or for fluid replacement, or in epidural and spinal procedures, and preservative-free Sterile Water for Injection is used instead where benzyl alcohol is a problem.

Reconstitution and Compatibility

Compatibility is set by the drug being diluted, not by the water. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for that product for the volume of diluent, the route and the rate of injection, and check the reconstituted solution for clarity and for any unexpected particles or colour change before use. Where the drug's labeling warns against benzyl alcohol - with a known hypersensitivity, or in pregnancy and lactation - Sterile Water for Injection is the correct vehicle. Keep the rubber stopper clean, avoid reusing a needle, and follow the storage conditions printed on the vial.

Stacks

Reconstitution Pairing: Bacteriostatic Water + Somatropin

Bacteriostatic Water is the diluent named in the labeling of several somatropin products, and the supplier's Somatropin vials are the usual partner here.

Note: use the diluent volume and storage stated for that hormone, and never reconstitute with a vial that is cloudy or contains particles.

Peptide Vials: Bacteriostatic Water + BPC-157 or CJC-1295 DAC

Bacteriostatic Water is used to dissolve lyophilized research peptides such as BPC-157 and CJC-1295 DAC before a vial is stored for repeated use.

Note: what can be mixed with the water is decided by the peptide's own instructions; where benzyl alcohol is not suitable, Sterile Water for Injection is used instead.

Consult a healthcare professional before reconstituting any injectable. Bacteriostatic Water is a diluent, not a drug, and every preparation follows the manufacturer's instructions for the product being diluted.

FAQ

Before you ask

Questions, answered

It is used only to dilute or dissolve drugs that are given by intravenous, intramuscular or subcutaneous injection, following the instructions of the manufacturer of that drug. Typical partners are lyophilized peptides, somatropin and human chorionic gonadotropin vials. It is not a medicine in itself and is not a fluid replacement.

Bacteriostatic Water for Injection contains 0.9% (9 mg/mL) benzyl alcohol as a preservative, which allows a multi-dose vial to be punctured repeatedly. Plain Sterile Water for Injection has no preservative, so it is intended for a single use. Where benzyl alcohol is a problem, the unpreserved version is the correct choice.

For many lyophilized peptides and for several somatropin products the labeling names bacteriostatic water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol as the diluent. Compatibility always follows the instructions of the drug being diluted, so check that document first, use the stated volume, and inspect the solution for clarity and for particles before use.

Follow the storage conditions printed on the vial and keep it away from light. Clean the stopper before each withdrawal, use a fresh needle every time, and never use a vial whose contents are cloudy or contain particles. Once a drug has been reconstituted, its own storage and in-use limits apply to the mixture.

The preservative is the safety issue. Solutions containing benzyl alcohol must not be used in neonates, and the preparation must not be used for fluid replacement or in epidural and spinal procedures. It must be made approximately isotonic before use, because intravenous administration without a solute may cause hemolysis. Stop and seek advice if a reaction appears after an injection.

The vial is listed here, but it is out of stock at the moment, so the product page is the place to watch for restocks. Batches are supplied with a Certificate of Analysis on file. In the United States this preparation is labeled Rx only, so check the rules where you live before ordering.
