Product overview

Melatonin - Meloset 3 mg and Altonil 10 mg Tablets

Melatonin is a hormone the body releases in the evening to signal that it is time to sleep. As a medicine it is used for short-term insomnia in adults, for longer-term sleep problems linked to conditions such as ADHD, and to reduce jet lag after travel across time zones. It is supplied here as Meloset 3 mg and Altonil 10 mg tablets, 60 tablets per pack. Where the problem is falling asleep rather than the body clock, a hypnotic such as Eszopiclone or Zopiclone is used instead.

  • Two variants: Meloset 3 mg and Altonil 10 mg
  • Melatonin sets the sleep-wake cycle
  • Used for short-term insomnia and jet lag
  • 60 tablets per pack by Aristo Pharmaceuticals

Variant Comparison

Both variants contain melatonin, so the difference is the strength in each tablet.

Variant Dosage Form and quantity Best use
Meloset 3 mg One tablet 1 to 2 hours before bedtime Tablet, 3 mg Short-term insomnia and jet lag
Altonil 10 mg One tablet 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime Tablet, 10 mg Higher doses for longer-term sleep problems, on medical advice

The 3 mg tablet matches the usual adult starting point and the dose used for jet lag. The 10 mg tablet is the top of the range: treatment normally starts lower and is built up gradually, and 10 mg a day is the maximum. Both tablets are swallowed whole and are not scored, so the strength of the pack sets the dose. Herbal sleep support such as Tagara is a different option for the same problem.

How Melatonin Works

Melatonin is not a sedative. It is the hormone the brain releases as light fades, and it tells the body clock that the night has started. Taken in the evening it shifts that signal earlier, which shortens the time it takes to fall asleep and helps the body adjust after a time-zone change. That is why it is given 30 minutes to 2 hours before the target bedtime. Sleeping pills work differently: they depress brain activity through the GABA system, and drugs such as Eszopiclone carry dependence and next-day impairment risks that melatonin does not.

Dosage & Administration

Adults usually take 2 mg of slow-release melatonin 1 to 2 hours before bedtime for short-term insomnia, for up to 13 weeks. For condition-related sleep problems the starting dose is 2 mg 30 minutes to 1 hour before bedtime, increased gradually to a maximum of 10 mg once daily. For jet lag, 3 mg once a day for up to 5 days at the destination bedtime, up to 16 courses a year. Slow-release tablets are taken with food, standard tablets 2 hours before or after food, swallowed whole. If a dose is missed, skip it; never double up. Avoid alcohol, which increases daytime drowsiness.

FAQ

Before you ask

Questions, answered

Melatonin is used for short-term sleeping problems in adults, for longer-term sleep problems linked to conditions such as ADHD or cerebral palsy, and to reduce jet lag after travel across time zones. It works on the body clock rather than by sedating the brain.

Take 2 mg of slow-release melatonin 1 to 2 hours before bedtime for short-term insomnia, for up to 13 weeks. For jet lag, 3 mg once a day for up to 5 days at the destination bedtime. Swallow tablets whole; slow-release tablets are taken with food, standard tablets 2 hours before or after food. Follow your doctor's instructions on strength.

Common effects are daytime sleepiness, headache, stomach ache, nausea, dizziness, irritability, dry mouth, dry or itchy skin, pains in the arms or legs, and strange dreams or night sweats. Serious effects are rare, under 1 in 1,000: changes to eyesight, fainting, confusion or vertigo, and unusual bleeding or bruising. Stop and speak to a doctor if any of these occur.

Yes. Melatonin can interact with antidepressants such as fluvoxamine and amitriptyline, benzodiazepines, blood pressure medicines, NSAIDs, oestrogens, opiate painkillers, psoralens, quinolone antibiotics, rifampicin, carbamazepine, cimetidine, thioridazine and warfarin, and with other sleeping medicines such as zopiclone or zaleplon. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about everything you take.

Do not drink alcohol with melatonin. Alcohol increases the daytime sleepiness and dizziness that melatonin can cause, and it changes the way the medicine works. If you feel sleepy or dizzy, do not drive, cycle or use tools or machinery.

For short-term sleep problems it is taken for 1 to 4 weeks and up to a maximum of 13 weeks. Longer courses are prescribed by a specialist for condition-related sleep problems, with the dose built up gradually to no more than 10 mg once daily. Jet lag treatment is limited to 5 days, with no more than 16 courses in a year.

Yes, 60-tablet packs of Meloset 3 mg and Altonil 10 mg are stocked here and international shipping is available at checkout. Melatonin is a prescription medicine in some countries and sold over the counter in others, so check the rules where you live before ordering.
