Modafinil - Modasmart 400 mg Tablets

Modafinil is a wakefulness-promoting medicine for excessive daytime sleepiness caused by narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnoea (used with breathing support) and shift work sleep disorder. It is supplied as Modasmart 400 mg tablets, 50 per pack, by Winlife Pharma. It keeps a person awake when their condition makes them sleepy at the wrong time; it is not a treatment for ordinary tiredness. For falling or staying asleep at night the medicines are different, such as Eszopiclone or a body-clock treatment such as Melatonin.

How Modafinil Works

Modafinil promotes wakefulness in the brain and is taken at a set time of day, not as needed: in the morning for narcolepsy and sleep apnoea, and about an hour before the shift for shift work disorder. Because it keeps people awake, it can make falling asleep harder when the day ends, so the timing should not be changed without medical advice.

Dosage & Administration

One tablet once a day with or without food, at the times described above, and never at a different time without medical advice. Common effects include headache, dizziness, trouble sleeping, nausea, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, dry mouth, thirst, nosebleeds and vision difficulty. Get medical help for rash with blisters or peeling skin, mouth sores, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, chest pain, an irregular heartbeat, hallucinations or thoughts of self-harm. Tell your doctor about high blood pressure, heart, liver or kidney disease or a history of depression, mania or psychosis; modafinil also makes hormonal contraception less effective, so a second method is needed. Herbal calming products such as Tagara are not a substitute for treating a diagnosed sleep disorder.
