Nimesulide is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug used for acute pain and for the symptoms of osteoarthritis, and in some countries for period pain in adolescents over 12 and adults. It is supplied here as Nodard 100 mg tablets, 60 tablets per pack, made by Cipla. Nimesulide is not authorised everywhere: it is registered in more than 50 countries but not in the United States, and its approved uses and doses differ between them. How Nimesulide Works

Nimesulide reduces pain and inflammation by blocking the enzymes that produce prostaglandins, the substances behind pain, swelling and fever. The reason it is treated with caution is the liver. European regulators reviewed it after reports ranging from symptomless liver enzyme rises to liver failure requiring a transplant, and Finland suspended the product in 2002. Because the liver injury has no early warning signs in most people, the medicine is used for short courses at the lowest effective dose rather than as a long-term painkiller.

Dosage & Administration

The maximum adult oral dose recommended by European regulators is 100 mg twice a day, and treatment is kept short; tablets are taken with or after food. Do not take it without medical advice or with other anti-inflammatories. Stop the medicine and contact a doctor immediately if you develop nausea, loss of appetite, pain in the upper right abdomen, dark urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or itching, because these can signal liver injury. Stomach bleeding is a risk of the whole NSAID group, and a stomach protector such as Pantoprazole is sometimes prescribed for people at higher risk. Alcohol should be avoided while taking it.
