Product overview

Zithromax - Azithromycin 250mg and 500mg Tablets

Zithromax contains azithromycin, a macrolide antibiotic supplied as 250 mg or 500 mg tablets in packs of 30. It is prescribed for bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, including bronchitis and pneumonia, for sinusitis, throat and skin infections, and for chlamydia. It does not treat viruses, so it is not used for colds or flu. Where a penicillin fits the infection better, a doctor may prescribe amoxicillin instead.

  • Two strengths - Zithromax 250 mg and Zithromax 500 mg, 30 tablets per pack
  • Macrolide antibiotic - a short course keeps working after the last tablet
  • Manufactured as a generic - marketed under the Zithromax brand name
  • Ships internationally from the supplier warehouse

Variant Comparison

Both packs hold the same medicine, azithromycin, and differ only in tablet strength. Which you order depends on the schedule your prescriber sets: 500 mg once daily for three days, or 500 mg on the first day then 250 mg on days two to five. The table below compares them.

Variant Dosage Form and quantity Best use
Zithromax 250 mg 250 mg per tablet Tablet, 30 tablets per pack Days two to five of a five-day course
Zithromax 500 mg 500 mg per tablet Tablet, 30 tablets per pack Three-day course or first day of a five-day course

Azithromycin has a half-life of about 68 hours, so the total dose across the course matters more than the number of tablets. A three-day course needs only three Zithromax 500 mg tablets; the five-day course opens with one Zithromax 500 mg tablet and continues with Zithromax 250 mg on days two to five. A pack of 30 covers a full course several times over. For the same respiratory or genital pathogens, doxycycline is a common alternative.

How Azithromycin Works

Azithromycin is a macrolide: it binds to the 50S part of the bacterial ribosome and blocks protein synthesis, so susceptible bacteria cannot grow and the immune system clears the infection. It is active against many organisms behind chest, sinus, throat and skin infections, and against chlamydia. It also works against bacteria that produce beta-lactamase enzymes, one reason it is chosen when amoxicillin and clavulanic acid is unsuitable. Tissue levels stay high for days after the last dose, so a short course is enough.

Dosage & Administration

Standard adult regimens are 500 mg once daily for three days, or 500 mg on the first day then 250 mg once daily on days two to five. Tablets may be taken with or without food, at the same time daily. Antacids with aluminium or magnesium should be taken two hours apart, as they reduce absorption. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember unless the next dose is close, and never double up. Follow your physician's instructions and finish the course even if symptoms improve.

FAQ

Before you ask

Questions, answered

Azithromycin treats bacterial infections of the respiratory tract such as bronchitis and pneumonia, sinus and throat infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and certain sexually transmitted infections including chlamydia. It is a macrolide antibiotic and does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu, so a doctor needs to confirm that the cause is bacterial before it is used.

The usual adult regimens are 500 mg once daily for three days, or 500 mg on day one followed by 250 mg once daily on days two to five. Tablets can be taken with or without food, at the same time each day. Antacids containing aluminium or magnesium should be separated from a dose by at least two hours. Complete the whole course as prescribed, even if you feel better early.

Common effects are nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain and vomiting. Serious but less common reactions include severe allergic reactions with swelling of the face or throat, an irregular heartbeat linked to QT prolongation, hearing loss or ringing in the ears, and antibiotic-associated diarrhea caused by C. difficile. Seek medical help immediately for difficulty breathing, facial swelling, or diarrhea that does not stop.

Yes. Antacids containing aluminium or magnesium reduce absorption and should be taken two hours apart. Azithromycin can increase the effect of warfarin, so clotting should be monitored, and it may interact with digoxin. Combining it with other medicines that prolong the QT interval raises the risk of an irregular heartbeat. Tell your prescriber about every medication and supplement you take before starting a course.

Both strengths are stocked here as 30-tablet packs, and international shipping is available at checkout. In many countries azithromycin requires a prescription, so check the rules that apply where you live before ordering. This listing is provided for information and is not a substitute for a medical consultation or a prescription.

Many people notice improvement within two to three days, but the full course must be completed to clear the infection properly. Because tissue levels stay high for several days after the last tablet, the effect continues after dosing stops. If symptoms get worse or do not improve within a few days, contact a doctor rather than repeating the course on your own.
