Product overview
Doxycycline 100mg - Tetracycline Antibiotic Capsules
Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic supplied as 100 mg capsules in a pack of 30. It is prescribed for bacterial infections of the skin and soft tissue, chest and respiratory tract, urinary tract and gums, and is a first-line treatment for chlamydia and other sexually transmitted infections. It is also used for acne and rosacea and to prevent malaria during travel. It works by blocking bacterial protein synthesis. Where a penicillin is suitable, amoxicillin or amoxicillin with clavulanic acid covers many of the same respiratory, skin and dental infections, and azithromycin is the single-dose option for chlamydia.
- 100 mg per capsule - 30 capsules per pack
- Tetracycline antibiotic - active against a broad range of bacteria
- Also used for acne, chlamydia and malaria prevention
- Manufactured as a generic - the same active substance as branded tetracyclines
How Doxycycline Works
Doxycycline belongs to the tetracycline class of antibiotics. It binds to the bacterial ribosome and blocks protein synthesis, so susceptible bacteria cannot multiply and the infection stops spreading. It is active against many of the organisms behind chest, skin, urinary and sexually transmitted infections, as well as the bacteria linked to acne and the parasites that cause malaria. It stays in the body at effective levels for a full day, so one or two doses daily are usually enough.
Dosage & Administration
The usual adult dose for most infections is 100 mg every 12 hours on the first day, then 100 mg once a day. Chlamydia is often treated with 100 mg twice a day for seven days, while acne may use a lower once-daily dose. To prevent malaria, take 100 mg once a day starting one to two days before travel, continue while in the area, and for four weeks after leaving. Swallow each capsule whole with a full glass of water while sitting or standing, and stay upright for at least 30 minutes to protect the food pipe. Keep dairy products, antacids and iron supplements at least two hours apart from a dose, because they reduce absorption. Complete the full course even if you start to feel better.

FAQ
Before you ask
Questions, answered
Doxycycline treats a broad range of bacterial infections, including chest and respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and gum infections. It is commonly prescribed for chlamydia and other sexually transmitted infections, for acne and rosacea. It is also used to prevent malaria in travellers, but it does not work against viral infections.
Take one 100 mg capsule with a full glass of water while sitting or standing, and stay upright for at least 30 minutes. For most infections the first day uses 100 mg every 12 hours, followed by 100 mg once a day. Take it at the same time each day, keep dairy, antacids and iron two hours away, and finish the whole course.
Common side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache and rash. Doxycycline can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so use sun protection. It can also irritate the food pipe if a capsule is swallowed without enough water or while lying down. Rare but serious effects include severe allergic reactions, raised pressure inside the head, and diarrhea caused by C. difficile.
There is no direct chemical interaction between alcohol and doxycycline, so the occasional drink is unlikely to cause a problem. Heavy drinking, however, can slow healing, may reduce how well the antibiotic works, and can worsen nausea or stomach upset. If you have a history of alcohol dependence or liver problems, speak to your doctor before starting a course.
Yes. Antacids, dairy products, and calcium or iron supplements block absorption and should be kept at least two hours from a dose. Doxycycline is not recommended with isotretinoin, because the combination raises the risk of raised pressure inside the head. It can also strengthen the effect of blood thinners such as warfarin, and it is generally avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Many people notice an improvement within one to two days, but symptoms can take longer to settle and the full course must be completed to clear the infection. If your symptoms get worse or do not improve within a few days, contact a doctor instead of repeating the course.
