Product overview
Ursodeoxycholic Acid - Ursocol 150 mg, 300 mg and SR 450 mg Tablets
Ursodeoxycholic acid, also called ursodiol, is a naturally occurring bile acid used as a medicine. It dissolves cholesterol gallstones in people who cannot have surgery, it prevents stones forming in people losing weight very quickly, and it is the standard treatment for primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), an autoimmune disease that slowly damages the small bile ducts in the liver. It is supplied here as Ursocol: 150 mg and 300 mg tablets and a 450 mg sustained-release tablet. Reflux that often comes with upper abdominal trouble is managed with a proton pump inhibitor such as Omeprazole.

Variant Comparison
All three variants contain the same active substance, so the difference is strength and release form.
| Variant | Dosage | Form and quantity | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ursocol 150 mg | Weight-based daily dose in divided intakes | Film-coated tablet, 30 per pack | Fine tuning for lighter adults and children |
| Ursocol 300 mg | Weight-based daily dose in divided intakes | Film-coated tablet, 30 per pack | Most adults on long-term treatment |
| Ursocol SR 450 mg | Weight-based daily dose in a sustained-release tablet | Sustained-release tablet, 30 per pack | Fewer daily intakes on a stable dose |
The 150 mg and 300 mg tablets let the prescriber build the daily dose tablet by tablet, because dosing follows body weight. Ursocol SR 450 mg releases the medicine gradually, so it suits a stable dose that is easier to take across the day. Nausea that sometimes comes with gallbladder and liver problems is treated separately with Domperidone.
How Ursodeoxycholic Acid Works
Ursodeoxycholic acid changes the composition of bile. It reduces the cholesterol the liver puts into bile so that cholesterol dissolves instead of settling into stones, and it displaces more toxic bile acids that build up when bile flow is poor. In primary biliary cholangitis this lowers the toxic load on liver cells and slows damage to the small bile ducts. Digestion can fail for other reasons too: a shortage of pancreatic enzymes is corrected with Pancreatin, separately from bile flow.
Dosage & Administration
Dosing is based on body weight and the reason for treatment. In primary biliary cholangitis the usual adult dose is 13 to 15 mg per kg per day divided into two to four intakes, taken with food. For dissolving gallstones the dose is lower, 8 to 10 mg per kg per day split into two or three intakes. Tablets are swallowed with water, not chewed. Gallstones may need up to two years of continuous use. If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless the next one is close; never double up. Do not stop without medical advice.

FAQ
Before you ask
Questions, answered
It is used to dissolve cholesterol gallstones in people who cannot have surgery or choose not to, to stop new stones forming in people who are losing weight very quickly, and to treat primary biliary cholangitis, an autoimmune disease that damages the small bile ducts in the liver. It must be taken for months before the effect appears.
Most people tolerate it well. Reported effects include dizziness, headache, muscle pain, hair loss, signs of infection, and burning or frequent urination. Indigestion, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation can occur, and rarely an allergic reaction with rash, itching, swelling or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about anything severe or persistent.
By body weight. In primary biliary cholangitis the usual adult dose is 13 to 15 mg per kg per day in two to four divided intakes with food. For dissolving gallstones it is 8 to 10 mg per kg per day in two or three intakes. This is why the 150 mg and 300 mg tablets are used together to build an exact daily amount.
Both contain ursodeoxycholic acid. Ursocol 300 mg is an immediate-release tablet, so the daily amount is split across two to four intakes. Ursocol SR 450 mg is a sustained-release tablet that releases the medicine gradually, which suits a stable daily dose taken in fewer intakes. Which one is used depends on the prescriber and the reason for treatment.
Yes, some. Antacids that contain aluminium can reduce how much ursodiol the body absorbs, so the label advises discussing them with your doctor or pharmacist first. Tell your prescriber about all prescription, over-the-counter and herbal products you take, because doses may need adjusting or monitoring.
The product label does not list a direct interaction with alcohol. Alcohol is still a burden on the liver and on gallbladder function, so it works against the reason this medicine is prescribed, and pharmacy guidance for this product is to avoid it or keep it to a minimum. Ask your own doctor what applies in your case.
