Product overview
Mucinac Effervescent - Acetylcysteine 600mg Tablets
Mucinac Effervescent contains acetylcysteine, a mucolytic supplied as 600 mg effervescent tablets in packs of 30. It is used in respiratory disorders where thick, viscous mucus collects - acute and chronic bronchitis, emphysema, bronchiectasis and cystic fibrosis - so secretions loosen and a productive cough clears them more easily. It eases phlegm rather than suppressing the cough reflex. Where allergy with postnasal drip keeps the airways congested, a doctor may also consider an antihistamine such as Desloratadine.
- 600 mg per effervescent tablet - 30 tablets per pack
- Mucolytic - lowers the viscosity of thick bronchial mucus

How Acetylcysteine Works
Acetylcysteine is a derivative of the natural amino acid cysteine. It opens the disulfide bridges that hold the macromolecules of mucus together, so the secretion is depolymerised and its viscosity falls. It is also a precursor of glutathione. Other mucolytics differ: Ambroxol stimulates serous secretion and enzyme release instead of splitting those bridges. In asthma, acetylcysteine can provoke bronchospasm, and it never replaces controller treatment such as Montelukast Sodium or a reliever such as Salbutamol Sulphate.
Dosage & Administration
Adults take one 600 mg effervescent tablet once daily, dissolved in half a glass of water and taken after food rather than on an empty stomach. Patients with a reduced cough reflex, including older and weakened patients, should take it in the morning. Space oral antibiotics two hours before or after acetylcysteine, and do not combine it with cough suppressants such as codeine, because damping the cough while secretions loosen lets mucus collect in the airways. If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless the next one is nearly due, and never double up. Do not use the tablets for more than 14 days without medical advice. Follow your prescribing physician's instructions.

FAQ
Before you ask
Questions, answered
Mucinac Effervescent contains acetylcysteine, a mucolytic used in respiratory disorders where thick, viscous mucus collects: acute and chronic bronchitis, emphysema, bronchiectasis and cystic fibrosis. It lowers the viscosity of bronchial secretions so a productive cough clears them more easily. It is not a cough suppressant and does not treat the infection itself.
Uncommon effects, seen in 1 to 10 people in 1000, are stomatitis, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, ringing in the ears, fever and low blood pressure. Hypersensitivity reactions include bronchospasm, rash, itching, urticaria and angioedema, and anaphylaxis is very rare. Very rarely, serious skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome have been reported. Get urgent help for facial swelling or trouble breathing.
Adults take one 600 mg effervescent tablet once daily. Dissolve the tablet in about half a glass of water, drink the solution straight away, and take it after food. Patients with a reduced cough reflex, including older or weakened patients, are advised to take their tablet in the morning. Do not use it for longer than 14 days without medical advice.
Dissolve one tablet in half a glass of water and drink it after food, not on an empty stomach; do not swallow or chew the tablet whole. Keep to the dose your doctor advised. If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless the next one is nearly due, and never double up.
Take oral antibiotics two hours before or after acetylcysteine, because mixing them can inactivate the antibiotic. Acetylcysteine should not be combined with cough suppressants such as codeine: loosening secretions while the cough reflex is damped lets mucus collect in the airways. It may also enhance the vasodilating effect of nitroglycerin.
The prescribing information and the patient leaflets checked for this card do not list an interaction between acetylcysteine and alcohol, and alcohol does not block its mucolytic effect. Acetylcysteine is used cautiously in people with a history of stomach ulcers, and alcohol irritates the stomach lining, so heavy drinking during a chest infection is best avoided.
