Product overview
Desloratadine - Clarinex 5 mg and Deslor 5 mg Tablets
Desloratadine is a long-acting, non-sedating antihistamine sold as 5 mg tablets under two trade names: Clarinex 5 mg in packs of 90 and Deslor 5 mg in packs of 60. It treats the sneezing, runny or blocked nose and itchy nose, throat or eyes of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, and the itching and hives of chronic urticaria. It is the active metabolite of loratadine. Where congestion is driven by leukotrienes rather than histamine, a doctor may add a leukotriene antagonist such as montelukast.
- 5 mg per tablet - Clarinex 5 mg ships as 90 tablets, Deslor 5 mg as 60
- Second-generation H1 antihistamine - once-daily, 24-hour symptom control
- Licensed for allergic rhinitis and chronic urticaria
- Manufactured as a generic under the Clarinex and Deslor names
Variant Comparison
Both packs hold the same 5 mg tablet, taken once daily; the difference is quantity, not strength. The table below gives the dose, the form and quantity supplied, and the best use of each variant.
| Variant | Dosage | Form and quantity | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clarinex 5 mg | 5 mg once daily | Film-coated tablets, 90 per pack | Year-round rhinitis or long-term hives |
| Deslor 5 mg | 5 mg once daily | Film-coated tablets, 60 per pack | One pollen season or a short course |
With the same strength and the same daily dose, the choice comes down to how long one box lasts. Clarinex 5 mg gives 90 tablets, about three months of daily treatment, which suits perennial rhinitis or chronic urticaria managed all year. Deslor 5 mg gives 60 tablets, around two months, and fits a single hay fever season, a course after a flare, or a first order.
How Desloratadine Works
Desloratadine is a long-acting tricyclic histamine antagonist. It binds selectively to the peripheral H1 receptor, blocking the histamine that drives sneezing, itching, watery eyes and a runny nose, and it also suppresses histamine release from human mast cells. It enters the brain only poorly, so drowsiness is far less common than with sedating agents such as ketotifen. Levels peak about three hours after a dose and the half-life is roughly 27 hours, allowing once-daily use.
Dosage & Administration
The usual adult dose is one 5 mg tablet once daily, with or without food. Do not raise the dose, because higher doses work no better and may cause sleepiness. Adults with liver or kidney impairment start on one tablet every other day. If you miss a dose, take it when you remember, and never double up. Where a cough with thick mucus accompanies the allergy, a doctor may add acetylcysteine or ambroxol, and where asthma is present a bronchodilator such as Asthalin may be prescribed.

FAQ
Before you ask
Questions, answered
Desloratadine relieves the nasal and non-nasal symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, including sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, and itching of the nose, throat or eyes. It is also used for the itching and hives of chronic urticaria. It is an antihistamine. In the United States the 5 mg tablet is licensed for allergic rhinitis from age 12.
In placebo-controlled trials at 5 mg daily, the events reported more often than on placebo were sore throat (4.1 percent), dry mouth (3.0 percent), and sleepiness, muscle pain, period pain and fatigue at roughly 2 percent each. Headache, tiredness, nausea and dizziness are also described. Serious allergic reactions such as rash, swelling or difficulty breathing are rare but need urgent medical attention.
Adults and adolescents aged 12 and over take one 5 mg tablet once a day, at about the same time each day, with or without food. Do not increase the dose, because higher doses have not been shown to work better and may cause drowsiness. Adults with liver or kidney impairment start on one 5 mg tablet every other day.
Desloratadine usually starts to work within about an hour, and blood levels peak roughly three hours after a dose. Because the half-life is about 27 hours, the effect builds over the first few days of regular use and each tablet covers a full 24 hours.
Desloratadine is far less sedating than the older antihistamines, but alcohol can still add to drowsiness, dizziness and slowed reactions, so keep drinking to a minimum and do not drive until you know how the tablets affect you. There is no chemical interaction that stops desloratadine working. If you have liver disease, ask your doctor before drinking alcohol with it.
Desloratadine has few clinically significant interactions. Ketoconazole, erythromycin, azithromycin, fluoxetine and cimetidine can raise its blood levels, but controlled studies found no relevant change in its safety profile. It is contraindicated if you are allergic to desloratadine or loratadine. Tell your prescriber and pharmacist about every medicine, supplement and herbal product you take.
Both brand options are stocked here as 5 mg tablets - Clarinex in packs of 90 and Deslor in packs of 60 - and international shipping is available at checkout.
