Product overview
Ambroxol 30mg Tablets - Ambrodil and Mucolite
Ambroxol is a mucolytic and expectorant supplied as 30 mg tablets in packs of 50. This family card covers two trade names with the same active substance at the same strength: Ambrodil 30 mg and Mucolite 30 mg, both manufactured as generics. Either tablet thins tenacious phlegm in acute and chronic bronchial and lung disease - productive cough, bronchitis, sinusitis and rhinopharyngitis with viscous secretions. Where allergy with postnasal drip drives the cough, a doctor may add an antihistamine such as Desloratadine.
- Same active substance and dose - ambroxol 30 mg per tablet
- 50 tablets per pack, either trade name
- Mucolytic and expectorant - thins thick mucus
- Two manufacturers - the difference is supply and price
Variant Comparison
Both variants are ambroxol 30 mg tablets made by two different manufacturers, so the active ingredient, the strength and the pack size are the same; the choice comes down to availability and price, not to a different effect. The table below gives the form, quantity and best use of each.
| Variant | Dosage | Form and quantity | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ambrodil 30 mg | 30 mg three times daily, then twice daily | Tablets, 50 per pack | Everyday pick when Ambrodil is in stock |
| Mucolite 30 mg | 30 mg three times daily, then twice daily | Tablets, 50 per pack | Chosen when Mucolite is in stock or cheaper |
Because Ambrodil 30 mg and Mucolite 30 mg are the same ambroxol at the same strength in the same 50-tablet pack, neither is stronger, faster or gentler. Order whichever name is in stock, or the one that costs less; switching between them does not change the dose. Only the box and the manufacturer differ.
How Ambroxol Works
Ambroxol acts in two directions: it stimulates the serous cells of the bronchial glands, raising the watery fraction of the secretion, and it increases the release of lysosomal and hydrolytic enzymes that break down the polysaccharide and protein chains holding mucus together. It also supports surfactant production and mucociliary transport, so sputum clears more easily. Other mucolytics differ: Acetylcysteine splits the disulfide bonds inside mucus proteins instead. In asthma, ambroxol is supportive only and does not replace controller treatment such as Montelukast Sodium or a reliever such as Salbutamol Sulphate.
Dosage & Administration
Adults and adolescents from 12 years take 30 mg three times daily for the first two to three days, then 30 mg twice daily. Take the tablets with or without food, preferably after a meal. Do not combine ambroxol with cough suppressants such as codeine, because damping the cough reflex while secretions loosen can let mucus collect in the airways. If you miss a dose, skip it rather than doubling up. See a doctor if symptoms do not improve within four to five days, and use ambroxol only on medical advice if you have kidney or severe liver problems.

FAQ
Before you ask
Questions, answered
Ambroxol thins thick, tenacious mucus in acute and chronic bronchial and lung disease, so a productive cough clears more easily. It is used for bronchitis, chronic pneumonia, bronchiectasis and asthmatic bronchitis, and for inflammatory conditions of the nose and throat with viscous secretions, such as sinusitis, pharyngitis and rhinitis. It eases secretions rather than suppressing the cough reflex.
Common effects are taste disturbance, nausea and numbness in the mouth. Vomiting, diarrhea, indigestion, abdominal pain and dry mouth are uncommon, and rash, urticaria, headache and fatigue are rare. Very rarely there are severe skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis, and anaphylaxis or angioedema. Stop the tablets and get medical help at once for a spreading rash, facial swelling or breathing difficulty.
Adults and adolescents from 12 years take one 30 mg tablet three times daily for the first two to three days, then one tablet twice daily. The dose can be increased to a total of 120 mg a day if your doctor advises it. Take the tablets with or without food, preferably after a meal, and drink plenty of water. If you miss a dose, skip it rather than doubling the next one.
Official product information for ambroxol does not list an interaction with alcohol and there is no disulfiram-like reaction to expect, but the interaction is not formally documented either. Alcohol can worsen nausea and stomach upset and add to dehydration, which thickens secretions, so it makes sense to limit drinking while you are recovering. Ask your doctor or pharmacist first if you have liver disease or drink regularly.
The main caution is against combining ambroxol with cough suppressants such as codeine, because a reduced cough reflex while secretions loosen can lead to mucus collecting in the airways. Otherwise clinically significant interactions with other medicines have not been observed. Ambroxol can be taken alongside antibiotics including amoxicillin, cefuroxime, erythromycin and doxycycline, and it raises their penetration into lung tissue. Tell your prescriber about every medicine you take.
Both 30 mg packs, Ambrodil and Mucolite, are stocked here as 50-tablet packs, and international shipping is available at checkout. Ambroxol requires a prescription in most countries, so check the rules where you live before ordering.
