Product overview
Montair - Montelukast Sodium 10mg and 5mg Chewable Tablets
Montair contains montelukast sodium, a leukotriene receptor antagonist supplied as 10 mg tablets or 5 mg chewable tablets in packs of 30. It is prescribed for long-term control of asthma, exercise-induced breathing difficulty and allergic rhinitis. It is a preventer, not a reliever: an attack under way needs a reliever such as Salbutamol Sulphate, and US regulators advise against montelukast for hay fever when allergy medicines such as Desloratadine are not enough.
- Two variants: Montair 10 mg and Montair Chewable 5 mg
- 30 tablets per pack, taken once daily
- Prescription medicine - maintenance control, not for an attack
- Generic medicine sold under the Montair brand
Variant Comparison
Both packs hold the same active ingredient and work in the same way; Montair 10 mg and Montair Chewable 5 mg differ in strength and tablet form, and each form suits a different age group.
| Variant | Dosage | Form and quantity | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Montair 10 mg | One 10 mg tablet once daily | Film-coated tablet, 30 per pack | Adults and adolescents 15 and older |
| Montair Chewable 5 mg | One 5 mg chewable once daily | Chewable tablet, 30 per pack | Children 6 to 14, or adults who prefer a chewable |
Choose Montair 10 mg for adults and adolescents of 15 years and older: it is a single film-coated tablet swallowed whole with water, with or without food, which makes it the simpler option for daily use. Choose Montair Chewable 5 mg when a smaller dose in a chewable form suits better - children of 6 to 14 years, or adults who find tablets hard to swallow. Apart from the strength and the way it is taken, both variants behave the same way in the body.
How Montelukast Works
Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist. Leukotrienes, released during an allergic reaction or exercise, tighten the muscles around the airways, swell the lining and increase mucus. Montelukast blocks the CysLT1 receptor these substances act on, so the airways narrow less often and less severely. It works on the inflammation pathway rather than opening the airway within minutes, so it is taken on a fixed daily schedule even when breathing feels normal. During a flare-up a doctor may add an oral corticosteroid such as Dexamethasone; maintenance alternatives include Ketotifen Fumarate.
Dosage & Administration
Adults and adolescents of 15 and older take one 10 mg tablet daily; children of 6 to 14 years take one 5 mg chewable daily, usually in the evening. Chewable tablets are chewed or sucked 1 hour before food or 2 hours after it. Never take more than one dose in 24 hours, and if you forget one, skip it rather than doubling up. Do not stop the medicine on your own.

FAQ
Before you ask
Questions, answered
Montelukast is used to prevent asthma symptoms such as wheezing, chest tightness, coughing and breathlessness in adults and children from 12 months of age. It also prevents breathing difficulty triggered by exercise and treats seasonal and year-round allergic rhinitis. It is maintenance treatment, never a treatment for an attack in progress.
Common side effects, seen in more than 1 in 100 people, include headache, diarrhoea, stomach pain, nausea or vomiting, high temperature and a mild rash. The most serious risk is the set of neuropsychiatric effects covered by a boxed warning: agitation, anxiety, depression, aggression, hallucinations, nightmares and sleep problems, tremor, and thoughts of self-harm. Stop the tablets and contact a doctor straight away if any appear.
Yes. Official UK guidance states that you can drink alcohol while taking montelukast, and there is no food or drink you need to avoid. Alcohol may still make any drowsiness or mood changes caused by the medicine more noticeable. If you notice mood or sleep changes, cut out alcohol and speak to your doctor.
Adults and adolescents aged 15 and over take Montair 10 mg, one tablet a day; children aged 6 to 14 are given Montair Chewable 5 mg, one chewable tablet daily. The dose is normally taken in the evening, and for exercise-induced symptoms it can be taken 2 hours before exercise. Never take more than one dose in 24 hours.
Montelukast starts working straight away and usually begins to help asthma symptoms within about a day. It does not relax the airway the way a reliever inhaler does, so an attack that is already under way needs your reliever medicine and medical advice. If you notice no improvement after 4 to 8 weeks, ask your doctor about other options.
Yes, a few. Epilepsy medicines such as phenobarbital and phenytoin, the antibiotic rifampicin and the cholesterol medicine gemfibrozil can change how montelukast behaves in the body, so tell your doctor if you take them. Everyday painkillers are normally safe, but avoid aspirin or ibuprofen if they have ever made your asthma worse.
Both variants are stocked here as 30-tablet packs - Montair 10 mg and Montair Chewable 5 mg - and international shipping is available at checkout. Montelukast is a prescription medicine in most countries, so check the rules that apply where you live before ordering.
