Product overview

Glimepiride - Amaryl 2 mg and 4 mg Tablets

Glimepiride is a sulfonylurea tablet for type 2 diabetes. It is used with diet and exercise, alone or with other diabetes medicines, and it makes the pancreas release more insulin. It is supplied here as Amaryl 2 mg and Amaryl 4 mg tablets, 90 tablets per pack, made by Sanofi. Because it depends on the pancreas producing insulin, it does not work in type 1 diabetes or ketoacidosis. The other main class of oral treatment works differently: see Metformin.

  • Two variants: Amaryl 2 mg and Amaryl 4 mg
  • 90 tablets per pack
  • Sulfonylurea that increases insulin release
  • A prescription medicine in most countries

Variant Comparison

Both variants contain glimepiride and are taken once a day, so the difference is the strength and the step of the dose range it covers.

Variant Dosage Form and quantity Best use
Amaryl 2 mg One tablet once daily with breakfast Tablet, 2 mg Starting dose and early adjustment
Amaryl 4 mg One tablet once daily with breakfast Tablet, 4 mg Usual maintenance dose

Treatment normally starts at 1 mg or 2 mg once daily, so the 2 mg tablet is the strength most people begin with. The maintenance range is 1 to 4 mg once daily, covered by the 4 mg tablet in a single intake; the maximum is 8 mg once daily. Because glimepiride forces insulin out, the dose is kept as low as possible. Stomach upset from diabetes tablets is managed by a doctor, with Domperidone used only if assessed as necessary.

How Glimepiride Works

Glimepiride closes a channel on the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas, making them release insulin. This lowers blood sugar but can also push it too low, especially when meals are skipped, after exercise, or in older patients and those with kidney or liver problems. The most common side effects are dizziness and nausea. Watch for low blood sugar: sweating, trembling, hunger, confusion, blurred vision or palpitations need fast treatment with sugar.

Dosage & Administration

One tablet once daily with breakfast or the first main meal, at roughly the same time each day. The starting dose is 1 mg or 2 mg, increased step by step if needed, with 8 mg once daily as the maximum. If a dose is missed, take it when you remember unless the next dose is close, and never take two doses at once. Diabetes raises cardiovascular risk, so cholesterol treatment with a statin such as Atorlip is often prescribed alongside. Do not drink alcohol: it worsens the side effects and can cause flushing, nausea, sweating and low blood sugar. Older adults are usually not started on glimepiride. Keep monitoring appointments, because the dose may change over time.

FAQ

Before you ask

Questions, answered

Glimepiride is used to treat type 2 diabetes in adults, together with diet and exercise and sometimes with other diabetes medicines. It lowers blood sugar by making the pancreas release insulin. It is not used in type 1 diabetes or in diabetic ketoacidosis, and it does not cure diabetes.

One tablet once daily with breakfast or the first main meal of the day, at about the same time each day. Treatment usually starts at 1 mg or 2 mg, and the maintenance dose is 1 to 4 mg once daily, with 8 mg once daily as the maximum. Your doctor adjusts it according to your blood sugar results.

The most common effects are dizziness and nausea. Because glimepiride lowers blood sugar, hypoglycaemia is the main risk, with sweating, trembling, hunger, confusion or palpitations. Serious but uncommon effects include liver problems (yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, light stools), blood problems (unusual bruising or bleeding, fever, sore throat) and diarrhoea. Report any of these to a doctor.

Yes. Aspirin, NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and naproxen, and salicylate painkillers can interact with glimepiride. Other medicines can raise or lower its effect, including some blood pressure, diuretic, thyroid and antifungal treatments, so tell your doctor about everything you take. Surgery and dental procedures should also be mentioned in advance.

Alcohol makes the side effects of glimepiride worse and can also push blood sugar too low. It may cause flushing, headache, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, weakness, blurred vision, confusion, sweating and breathing difficulty. Ask your doctor what, if anything, is safe for you before drinking.

Older adults should usually not take glimepiride, because it is not considered as safe or as effective as other medicines used for the same condition, and the risk of low blood sugar rises with age. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits, and never change or stop treatment on your own.

Yes, 90-tablet packs of Amaryl 2 mg and Amaryl 4 mg are stocked here and international shipping is available at checkout. Glimepiride is a prescription medicine in most countries, so check the rules where you live before ordering, and keep the pack out of reach of children.
