Ketotifen is used as maintenance treatment for allergic conditions. In Canada and several other countries it is licensed as an add-on medicine for mild atopic asthma in children aged five and over, and it is also used for allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis and chronic urticaria. It reduces how often and how severely symptoms occur, but does not treat an attack already under way.

Drowsiness is the most common effect, reported in around 8 to 10 percent of users, along with dry mouth, dizziness and headache. Increased appetite and weight gain are well documented. Some people, especially children, become restless, irritable or unable to sleep. Rarely, ketotifen has been linked to seizures, liver problems and severe skin reactions, so report a spreading rash or yellowing of the eyes to a doctor.

Weight gain is a recognised side effect. In a controlled trial in children it was reported by 5.3 percent of those taking ketotifen against 1.3 percent on placebo, and increased appetite is also described. Alcohol should be avoided or kept to a minimum. Ketotifen may potentiate the effects of alcohol, sedatives, hypnotics and other antihistamines, so combining them can intensify drowsiness and slow your reactions. The usual adult dose is 1 mg twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening. If the response is not adequate, some clinicians increase it to 2 mg twice daily. To reduce initial sedation, treatment often begins with 0.5 mg to 1 mg at night for the first few days. Tablets are swallowed whole, with or without food.

Yes. Ketotifen can potentiate sedatives, hypnotics and other antihistamines, and it may lower the seizure threshold, so caution is needed with medicines that do the same. A reversible fall in platelets has been reported with oral antidiabetic drugs. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors such as tranylcypromine are not recommended, and tramadol, bupropion, clomipramine and donepezil are usually avoided.
